American
Red Cross Blood Drives
On
four dates during the academic year, Biology students in FYE classes
and in Biology Club will volunteer at on-campus blood drives for the
American Red Cross. Students assist by promoting donation among their
peers, by registering volunteers as they arrive at the drive, and by
personing the canteen for donors.
Science
on Wheels is a community outreach program designed to promote interest
in Science among K-12 students. Each year a group of Alfred students
and faculty take a number of demonstrations and experiments on the road
to area schools. AU Biology students, especially those interested in
education, are encouraged to participate in this program.
The
48 Hour Challenge is a game for teams of high schools students and their
advisor. Clues are posted to the 48 Hour Challenge Website, and teams
must use scientific logic and reasoning to figure out the problem. Teams
prepare at their home schools, and then travel to Alfred for 48 hours
of fun in the labs, where they are able to conduct experiments in order
to solve the problem! Alfred Biology faculty and students assist the
high school students in the biology labs while they are on campus.
The
AU Biology Club participates in several community outreach activities
each year. Examples of past activities include helping to organize Blood
Drives, participating in March of Dimes Walks, participating in AIDS
walks, as well as other charity events.
