BA with a concentration in Biology Course Requirements
All biology majors are required to take two semesters of General Biology (or Fast Track BIO), Research Methods in Biology, Biostatistics, Genetics, two semesters of General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. In two required semesters of seminar, students lead discussion of the biological literature, applying for graduate and professional schools, and writing proposals and resumes. Upper level requirements and electives are determined according to students career interests and their decisions to emphasize either cell / molecular biology or organismal / ecological biology. Suggested Course Sequence

The Biology Minor Course Requirements
Students in virtually any other major can earn a general minor in biology. Good planning facilitates timely completion of core requirements and electives are chosen to best serve the student.

The Biology Illustration Minor Course Requirements
This minor is an interdisciplinary program of the Division of Biology, the Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts (“BAFA”), and the School of Art & Design. It serves students pursuing a career in scientific/medical illustration and enables biology majors to also pursue an interest in art. The minor requires classes in drawing and other studio arts in addition to selected and elective biology courses.

The Biomedical Materials and Engineering Science Minor Course Requirements
Our students can specifically prepare to enter the Master of Science in Biomedical Materials Engineering Science. The “BMES” Program seeks to educate students in the exciting and rapidly expanding study of interactions between living and non-living materials. The Master’s program is offered by AU’s School of Engineering. Students interested in a BMES minor should see Dr. Flick.

Division of Biology Course Descriptions

Fast Track BIO
This special summer course is planned for the four weeks just before Orientation Week. It allows students a short period to focus only on learning biology. It is an intense, 6 credit course that combines the content of General Biology I (BIOL 201, 4 credit hours) and General Biology II (BIOL 202, 4 credit hours) and fulfills two of the prerequisites needed for most other biology courses. It is a team-taught course that allows the faculty to teach the areas of their specialization, and it lets you get to know the AU biologists right away. New students who complete BIOL 203 will be two courses ahead in their freshman year.

Plan ahead...   Fall 2007 Course Offerings         Future course offerings (5 year plan)
